Editorial policy
How we decide what to publish, how it is written and edited, and how we keep it accurate.
Our purpose
Serene Farewells exists to help families understand funeral, cremation, burial, memorial and preplanning options. Every page should help a reader make a better-informed decision or take a clear next step. We do not publish content just to fill a category or to target a keyword.
Principles
- Accuracy over volume. We would rather publish fewer, better pages.
- Plain language. We explain industry terms and avoid unnecessary jargon.
- Calm, not alarming. We don't use fear, false urgency or emotional pressure.
- Neutral on choices. We explain burial, cremation and other options without steering readers toward any of them. Our tools inform decisions; they do not make them.
- Inclusive. Our readers come from many faiths and none. We describe religious and cultural practices respectfully and don't assume a belief system.
- Honest about limits. Where laws or prices vary by state, provider or circumstance, we say so rather than presenting one answer as universal.
Who creates our content
Content is researched and drafted by Serene Farewells and edited by our editor, Steven Royster, a Licensed Funeral Director in the State of Florida. We may use software tools, including AI writing assistants, to help research, outline or draft. Any such material is checked against our sourcing standards and edited before publication; we do not publish unedited automated content, and we do not invent personal experiences, quotes, case studies or testimonials.
Edited vs. reviewed
Each article shows its editorial status near the top:
- Edited by Steven Royster — the page has been edited for Serene Farewells and meets our editorial and sourcing standards.
- Reviewed by Steven Royster, Licensed Funeral Director — State of Florida, with a review date — Steven has specifically reviewed the page for professional and practical accuracy as of that date.
We never display a review label or review date for a page that hasn't actually been reviewed, and we don't back-date reviews.
Dates
"Published" is the date a page first appeared. "Updated" is the date it was last materially revised — not cosmetic edits. We don't change dates to make content appear fresher than it is.
Sources
Claims about benefits, regulations, legal requirements and consumer rights are based on primary sources such as federal and state agencies wherever possible, and linked in a "Sources and references" section. Cost figures are presented as ranges and attributed where they come from a published survey. See our sources and fact-checking policy.
Sensitive topics
For topics such as unexpected deaths, deaths at home, medical examiner involvement, transporting remains, death certificates and benefits, we describe general patterns and point readers to the authority that decides — a funeral director, medical examiner or coroner, hospice, or government agency. We don't invent procedures or present general guidance as the law of every state.
Advertising, affiliates and independence
Serene Farewells may earn commissions from affiliate links, including as an Amazon Associate. Commercial considerations do not decide what we say about funeral options or which choices we explain. Affiliate links appear only where a product is genuinely relevant — mainly our buying guides — and never in urgent guidance for people dealing with a recent death. Our editor's professional credential is not used to endorse products. See our affiliate disclosure.
We do not accept payment for favorable coverage of any funeral home or provider. If we introduce sponsored listings in the future, they will be clearly labeled as sponsored.
Keeping content current
Pages that include figures that change regularly — such as benefit amounts or prices — are prioritized for periodic review. Where a figure changes every year, we link to the official source rather than repeating a number that may go out of date.
